The history of the car that started the American Muscle Cars era is amazing. In 1964, the GTO was simply an equipment package for the Pontiac LeMans. And all this due to internal regulations within the GM concern, which forbade the installation of engines with a capacity greater than 330 cui (5400 ccm) in the concern’s cars. The idea was not to create a rival for the Chevrolet Corvette within the organisation.
However, a group of Pontiac engineers, led by John DeLorean, secretly prepared a special version of the Pontiac Tempest (as an equipment package), called the GTO, hiding it from the company’s management. The GTO buyers received, among others 389 cui (6.400 ccm) engine, 4 speed manual transmission, Tri-Power carburettor and many other extras in the version. The GTO was created as a legal catch, interestingly enough as it is considered it is one of the most desired and admired AMCs.
